Encouraging more Women to work in Tech

Encouraging more Women to work in Tech

The discussion about gender equality in the workplace is not a new topic; however, based on the fact that there are still challenges in attracting women when recruiting, we see that the work needs to continue, and Betsson Group supports this in different ways.

Arranging recruiting events

On our mission to further strengthen our diversity within the group and inspire women to pursue a tech career we decided to host the Women Hack event, an invite-only recruiting event focusing on connecting female software engineers, UI/UX designers, and product managers with opportunities at tech companies.

During the event, the participants took part in a speed dating session with 13 different companies. “From a recruiting perspective, it might seem a bit strange to invite your competitors," Helena Walker, HR Manager in Stockholm, says and continues. "However, our purpose with this is to contribute to the whole tech industry. By joining hands we can play a big part in inspiring females to choose a tech career from the start, and also continue their career within the tech industry. With this event, we hope to inspire other companies in the industry to take actions on their own. Simply put, we need to work together on this,” she says.

Around 90 women showed up for the event and instantly started to mingle. All in all, it was a good evening with snacks, interesting interviews, discussions and most of all a lot of networking.

Dedication and long-term perspective can pay off

Helena also points out the fact that Betsson Group wants to encourage people of all ages, genders and nationalities to learn more about programming and code, not just women. By working on all levels, over a long period change can be achieved. “In Stockholm and Malta, we have reoccurring events called Coding for kids. Which is an opportunity for employees to bring their kids to work for a basic programming course, to hopefully increase their interest in technically oriented educations in the future,” she says.

Clearer goals

We at Betsson Group are always working creating and further improve a great diverse workplace, no matter what gender, race, religion, culture and language you belong to and speak. We are proud to say that we have 53 different nationalities working for us, and would like to improve the percentage of women working for us. As of today, around 30% of our employees are women, a percentage we want to increase significantly, and for 2018 we aim to have 50% of our recruitments filled by female candidates for our office in Stockholm.
