At Betsson Group, we certainly aim high and with that comes the prospect of hiring the best talent! We sat down with Matthew Sciberras, our Director of Information Security to find what he looks for when recruiting for his team!

You’ve now been with Betsson Group for over 2 years, can you tell us a little bit about why you joined?

I was always computer savvy since when I was a kid. I had built my own computer when I was 11 years old and that had fascinated me. Joining Betsson was an obvious choice to me; the largest iGaming company in Malta invests in its own employees and with lots of room to grow within the company.

Betsson Group values InfoSec as company data is one of its most important assets. It invests in cutting edge tools to help us in our day to day operation and also invests in its people. We promote training and provide it on an ongoing basis.

I’ve started my InfoSec career 11 years ago, did my certified ethical hacking (CEH) course and got hooked. From then on I became an EC-Council Trainer, a penetration tester and moved on in being an ISMS manager for ISO 27001 for 6 years. Last year I got my CISSP certification – a prestigious certification in the InfoSec world.

You are currently on the hunt for a SecOps Engineer to join the team, what are the dynamics like?

We are a hard-working, motivated team of five-some with a focus on the operational security and some more into the Infosec Governance side. I feel that we are more like a group of friends who help each other excel within our remit. I am sure that the rest of the team can vouch for this.

As a team, we’re good at appreciating the hard work that everyone puts in and thus organise quite a few team-building events. A few recent ones were Quad Biking around the Maltese islands, drifting a Nissan Skyline (image below) and also a dinner in the sky at 80m high with our feet dangling down whilst enjoying a good meal overlooking most of Malta.

Sounds like a close-knit team! So for the new person joining, what do they need to do to impress you during an interview?

We’re looking for someone who has a passion for information security, who wants to be part of something big, someone who wants to make a difference.

They need to have past experience in software development, with a background experience in security analysis… think of it as a secure coding ninja! They will also be managing our Security Operation Centre which we are currently setting up.

What would be the main challenge they would face?

The roadmap for this year is extremely bright. From getting company accreditation to setting up a new Security Operation Centre, it is never a dull day for us here at Betsson.

Sounds like a challenge for sure!

Exactly, but the best thing is that Betsson Group invests in Information Security. We are using cutting edge tools, have really experienced people in InfoSec and most importantly, total buy-in from top executives. Our function isn’t just an afterthought. We consider ourselves as business partners to the organisation by producing value within our remit.
